Video filtering and measurement

In November 2002 we have started the project on "Video filtering and quality measurement". The project's goal is to design new high-quality deinterlacing and denoising methods for streaming video.

The tasks of the project include:

  • Design of video denoising method.
  • Design of high-quality video deinterlacing method.
  • Design and implementation of metrics for evaluation of different video processing algorithms. Testing of different algorithms using the developed metrics.

Example of difference bitween original frame and denoised frame for standard susi.avi video clip. The images reveal which methods are using motion information.

Another part of this project is research and development of methods for video deinterlacing. This task gains high importance in satellite TV broadcasting and DVD on LCD-TV or plasma-panel displays. This direction was also initiated by Samsung.

Examples of original interlaced frame and results of several deinterlacing methods.

Testing of prefiltering, postfiltering and compresssion methods.

Example: Original frame from "Terminator-2" movie, decompressed frame (open source codec Xvid) and per-pixel difference.
